Education Division of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York (TECO) has launched its first ever game design exhibition “Level Up 2015 Taiwan Game Design Festival in New York” on May 30th and 31st. This is the first game design exhibition featuring works from Taiwanese students and themes from Taiwan. The works were selected by a group of experts from both academia and the game industry. The title of the exhibition, LEVEL UP, embodies the message that most gamers strive for -- to break boundaries and to win the game. The idea of succeeding is embodied throughout the exhibition in works ranging from digital games to non-digital games and even game art.
The event invited the special guest, the Deputy Minister Lin Si Ling from MOE attending to the opening. She was excited to join the opening show and appreciate the hard work from the students. She explained that “I believe that this game design exhibition not only highlights the technological and creative potential of game design in New York, but also explores the characteristics of the genre as a new art form, while providing every visitor with insight into both artistic and technical aspects of game creation.” The Education Division Director Charlin Chang also said that “The Education Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York (TECO) want to provide a platform that connects industrial resources with students so that excellent works can be exposed in the metropolitan area.” Selected works from New York University, Parsons School of Design, and the School of Visual Arts, coming from as far as Indiana State, are dynamic and designed in various mediums. Rising Suns allows the player to use a camera to photograph and decide the narrative of the Sino-Japan War. Falling investigates a homicide from the perspective of the victim in a sophisticated atmosphere. Life Cycle examines the meaning of life with sleek and simple interaction with the game. Not only the digital games are rich in creativity, the Non-digital games are also welcomed by these young designers. Formation: Three Kingdoms is based on the history of ancient China, showing how cultural diversity is incorporated into the design of a game. LEVEL UP opened at 2:30 p.m. on May 30th, and was accompanied with multiple cosplayers and a big game. The panel featuring gurus of game industry started at 4 p.m. and include CEO of Muse Games Howard Tsao, and Director of Partnership in SHINRA Technologies Colin Williamson. The exhibition continued through May 31st. Screening of video artworks would demonstrate how gaming elements perpetuate into the practice of art-making and life. Education Division of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York (TECO) has launched its first group illustration exhibition “"One World, Different Strokes. This two-week exhibition (May 16 to 28) brings together fifteen of New York's most experienced Taiwanese-American illustrators as well as currently enrolled or recently graduated Taiwanese students from America's top art schools. On the opening reception day (May16), it has attracted more than hundreds artists, professors, and students attending to the event. There was a famous book author of “From Newton, Einstein to God:Poetic Memoir” Dr. Leona Ying, who is also a winner of “2015 Next Generation Indie Book award” coming to the event. He expressed that wonderful illustration make his book become more attractive to the readers, and he was honored to be the part of the event.
TECO Education Director Charlin Chang expressed her opinion, “The unique of illustration is about the expression of the story from each of it. Recently, Taiwanese illustrators become more common and popular in the mainstream. We should show our fully support to these creative students. Also one of the illustrator, Jennie Yip points out “the biggest difference between illustration and fine art is that illustration is a form of commercial art: its aesthetics applies to everyday life. It has to perform certain functions and convey information to its target audience. It needs to take into account the practical and the aesthetic. This information is carried through newspapers, magazines, books, merchandise, and the internet into public life.” The fifteen Taiwanese illustrators are Nina Edwards, Jennie Yip, Clovia Ng, Wen-Chi, Fang-Chun Lo, Julia Yellow, Ying-Fan Chen,Shao-Wei Chang, Keisha Chiu,Susan Lee,Han-Yuan Yu(Fashion Institute of Technology), Haley Lin(School of Visual Art) ,Yu-Ming Huang .( Savannah College of Art and Design) , Yu Ting Cheng,Jessie Luo,Maryland Institute College of Art). The exhibition is very diverse, through different creative themes (fashion, travel, fantasy, character design), mediums (watercolor, oil painting, digital, video) and markets (animation, graphic novels, picture books, stationery, decorative wall art), these illustrators demonstrate diverse, lively, and everyday sides of the illustration field. on April 12.2015. Education Division Director Charlin Chang also invited a native famous conductor Yunn-Shan Ma leading the Colleges Chorale and Cantori to perform some local Taiwanese folk songs too. This event had successfully attracted more than hundreds audiences attending. The Hobart and William Smith Colleges Chorale is a mixed ensemble comprising the finest student vocal talent on the campus. The 35-voice group performs a wide range repertoire The Colleges Cantori is a select chamber vocal ensemble comprising members from the larger Colleges Chorale. The 18-voice Cantori performs a wide range of a cappella choral literature, including each year a new work by a different distinguished American composer for the Cantori Commissioning Project as a commitment to the fostering of American contemporary choral music. Yunn-Shan Ma, a native of Taiwan, is active as a conductor, pianist and educator in both America and Asia. Ms. Ma is the current music director of the Taiwanese Choral Society of Rochester. She received the full scholarship for the doctorate study at the Eastman School of Music in 2011 under the tutelage of Dr. William Weinert and Neil Varon. While at Eastman, she has directed the New Horizons Chorus of the Eastman Community School, assisted the Eastman Opera and served as the instructor of the basic conducting labs. She is currently visiting teaching at the Hobart and William Smith Colleges for 2014-15 where she teaches music theory, conducting and leads the College Chorale, Cantori and the Woodwind Ensemble. With a passion for symphonic, operatic, choral-orchestral and contemporary repertoire, Ms. Ma has been selected to participate in distinguished competitions and master classes mentored by Helmuth Rilling, Mark Gibson, Donald Hunsberger, Johannes Schlaefli, Robert Page, Joseph Flummerfelt, Maurice Peress, and Donald Portney. The Colleges Chorale not only holds a formal concert at the end of each term but also performs at a variety of campus events throughout the year. This year, the Colleges Chorale and Cantori are led by guest conductor, a Taiwan native, Yunn-Shan Ma. from Taiwan. For their Spring Tour 2015, they will hold concerts in Elmira, Bronx, Saratoga Springs, Albany, Rochester and New York City. Ms. Ma expressed her appreciation of Director Chang’s invitation, “ Tt is such a huge honor to perform in TECO office, we really thank you Director Charlin’s invitation and her wonderful arrangement for us.” This concert was divided into 2 parts. The first half of the concert theme was “Light and Night” which includes a cappella works of the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, larger-scaled orchestral-choral works of the Classical and Romantic periods, and contemporary compositions. The second half was” Music from Women Composers” which includes the famous religion pieces from Hildegard von Bingen. At the end of the show, the Colleges Chorale and Cantori also perform some local Taiwanese folk songs too, for example : “Longing for the Spring Breeze”, “Tambourin Chinois”, “Dalubaling”, and “ Diu Diu Dang Ah”. Meanwhile, there are some Taiwanese alumni the Eastman School of Music performing in the concerts as the special guests. They were soprano Hsin-mei(Tracy) Chang, violinist Chen-Han(Cliff) Tsai, and Pianist Yueh-Chen(Annie) Wang. Also Lai Yin Music Society in New York performed during the concert by singing local Taiwanese Songs. Education Division of Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in New York (TECO) has launched its first Spring Concert in 2015 which is also the 30th event of its department on February 27. The event invited five young Taiwanese musicians Joy Wang, Sylvia Chen, Tracy Chang, Yi-Wen Lai and Chang-En Lu giving their fantastic performance to the audiences. During the show, Joy Wang performed the《Farewell Etude 》to commemorate Taiwanese composer Tyzen Hsiao, who( known as the “Taiwanese Rachmaninoff”) just passed away on February 24. The audiences were touched and atmosphere was warm and moving. The spring concert is "Four Seasons TECO Music Salon" series of five, and it is the first one in 2015. Education Division of TECO actively encourages all young Taiwanese to show their strength and talent, and particularly to establish a strong relationship in New York City among the music community and all the young musicians. The concert provided a wonderful program list to the audiences, which including Schumann: Fantasiestücke Op. 73 (舒曼: 幻想小品),Amy Beach: Chanson d'Amour (艾米 碧曲:愛之歌), Gordon Chin: Phantasy (金希文: 幻想曲), Ya-Chu Yang: A Tiny Crab and a Butterfly (楊雅筑 : 云蝶。云蟹), TyZen Hsiao ( known as the “Taiwanese Rachmaninoff): Farewell Etude Op.55 (蕭泰然: 告別練習曲), and Astor Piazolla : Four seasons (皮亞佐拉:布宜諾斯艾利斯的四季)。 The Spring Concert featured five Taiwanese classical musicians and singers from the most prestigious music programs in the world. First, Taiwanese cellist Yi-Chun Chen (Sylvia Chen) has performed both as a soloist and chamber musician in Asia and in the United States. She is currently pursuing a master’s degree and is adjunct cello faculty at Steinhardt of New York University, studying with Marion Feldman and Kikuei Ikeda of theTokyo String Quartet. Second, Taiwan native soprano Hsin-Mei Chang( Tracy Chang) had won many competitions in Taiwan before she embarks her musical journey to the United States. In 2011, Ms. Chang won the first place in Friends of Eastman Opera Vocal Competition, judged by the Metropolitan Opera manager- Lenore Rosenberg. She looks forward to participating in the master class series at The Metropolitan Opera Guild in March, 2015. Ms. Chang receives full scholarship to pursue a Doctorate of Musical Arts at the City University of New York. Third, Indigenous Taiwanese pianist Chi Wang, (Joy Wang) expecting herself as a versatile artist, has presented abundant music related performances in various forms as a soloist, chamber musician, and singer. After finishing her bachelor degree, Miss. Wang received admissions for master degree from Manhattan School of Music, Mannes School, New York University and Carnegie Mellon University with scholarship. Under the studio of well-known music educationist Nina Svetlanova in Manhattan School of Music, Ms. Wang has been highly commented by Prof. Svetlanova as being “A very talented, artistic, characteristic, mature pianist with great musicality and a certain presence of stage.” Fourth, Chang-En Lu after beginning his violin studies at the tender age of five, he eventually graduated from Taipei National University of the Arts where he studied with Wei-Ming Hwang and Min-Yen Chien. Furthermore, from 2008 to 2012, he have received the honored Presidential Award every semester at Taipei National University of the Arts. Currently, he pursues his master degree at Manhattan School of Music with Nicholas Mann. Moreover, a native of Taiwan, pianist Yi-Wen Lai began her piano study at the age of seven. Ms. Lai completed her Master’s degree and Bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance at National Taiwan Normal University, and holds a Master’s degree in Piano Accompanying and Chamber Music at Eastman School of Music where she studied with Jean Barr. She is now pursuing her Doctorate in Collaborative Piano at New England Conservatory, studying with Jonathan Feldman and Cameron Stowe. Taiwanese composer Tyzen Hsiao who( known as the “Taiwanese Rachmaninoff”) just passed away on February 24. These young musicians expressed their sadness and their love of this great composer. They said “listening Tyzen Hsiao’s music is an enjoyment and a bless. His music makes them proud to be a Taiwanese” Sylvia Chen also said: "We are full of gratitude for the concert, thank TECO’s support ,let our music to be heard. We will continue to make effort to improve in the future.” Besides this Spring concert, Education Division of TECO will actively commit to expand the stage to show the strength of the students from Taiwan. There were a lot famous New York designers, and overseas Taiwanese, students nearly 200 people attended to the show. TECO had invited 12 cool young fashion designers who come from prestigious schools of fashion design industry and 26 international models to join the events and to exhibit their designs which including 68 set various styles of clothing collection. Additionally, the show invited 11 special overseas Taiwanese guests to join the catwalk show. It was totally an excitement and a fabulous event of the night.
The show divided into a dynamic runway shows and a exhibition (Feb14 to 15) The opening reception night bought up a runway show which including 68 sets of clothing from 12 designers. The runway designers list is following: Emily Peng, Szu ting chen, Pei-Ju Ni,Tien Jan Athena Lin,Twiggy Suen,Avy Tseng, Kacey Chang Lea Shi Chu Chi ,Rachel Hsieh , Lillian Hsu, and Irene Yang . The runway organizer, Emily Pang who studies at FIT excitedly said: "The participating designers are very much cherish every opportunity to have this exhibition in New York, after this cooperation, we became best friends, TECO is such a great place to offering our stage." The exhibition was a 1 week event and it exhibited 11 young filmmakers’ movies and stages design. And the grand finale of the “Salute To Broadway- Movies Sings” which was the opening show of the film exhibition and was held at 6:30pm at Jan16 at TECO.
This is the first time, ever, that TECO has held a Taiwanese student film exhibition on such a variety of subjects that brings together young Taiwanese filmmakers studying and working in New York to showcase their work. The exhibition included 11 young filmmakers from New York University and Columbia University graduate’s film programs. The exhibition included works from directors, screenwriters, producer, cinematographer, film score composers, and production designers. All of these works presented a variety of aspects of film making and provides a platform for young Taiwanese filmmakers to share their ideas and creativity. TECO Education Division Director Charlin Chang mentioned that her department has organized 27 events in 2014 which including Music, Sports, employment, art, computer design, construction and so on. And she will hard work and continue to create a wonderful stage for students from Taiwan. She pointed out because lots of foreigners passionate about Taiwan film culture and there are lots of talented and gifted Taiwanese students in New York, Therefore, in the beginning of 2015, she would like to provide a golden chance for them to share their works to the world and let them shine. The “Spotlight on New York: 2015 Taiwanese Student Film Exhibition” divided into 3 categories: student’s film, special films (2 long films 2 short films, all are nominated or won international award), and youth director seminar (Ming-Lang Chen, Pei-Ju Hsieh, Chia-Ching Lin). Each youth director’s film is very unique, like Ming-Lang Chen’s Tomorrow comes Today , Pei-Ju Hsieh’s Maquette1 :1000, Chia-Ching Lin’s Knighthood and 1987 Studio’s Conspiracy. There director seminar was organized on Jan17 (Sat) 3:15 at TECO office too. The first ever joint exhibition "Zero boundaries - 2014 New York exhibition of cutting-edge creativity Taiwan" was held on December 12th, 7 P.M at the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office (TECO) in New York City. There were 37 various types of creative designers to show their work. The opening ceremony was held at the same time. Moreover, there was a performing art projection outside of the TECO building that made it to be a fantasy and eye-catching landmark in midtown Manhattan.
This was the first collaboration of TECO in the planning and emerging designers organized exhibitions of art and design, but also with the new media art, interactive art and architecture projected new art exhibition. These 37 artists were selected from thousands of participants. It showed the variety of new media creation, including computers, technology, installation art mediums and other kinds of topics, using different creative approach, the performance of self-challenge creator creative thinking. In order to show the cooperation and courage, the organization crews also put on the collective animation outside the TECO building, which including romantic castle incarnation and mysterious animal image symbol that bring up a colorful winter warm lively atmosphere. TECO Ambassador Wei Liang ( Paul) Chang at the opening ceremony said: "This new collaboration art exhibition for the first time overseas and building projection, combined with the New York Winter festival lively pace, to show the creative design, but also the full performance curatorial team of professional and courage, made us see that Taiwanese’s superb talent and artistic talent and creativity. " TECO Education Director Charlin Chang said: "Some of the exhibition artists have won numerous awards at international level. Each piece is very unique and has its own creative approach.
